Strasbourg Christmas Markets 2026: Where to Stay to Make the Most of Them

Marché de noël de strasbourg

Every year, as the festive season approaches, Strasbourg hosts some of the most famous Christmas markets in Europe. Spread across several districts of the city centre, the markets offer a wide selection of handicrafts, Christmas decorations, Alsatian specialities, local treats, hot drinks and gift ideas. Visitors can also discover themed chalets, seasonal events and the Christmas traditions that have made the Alsatian capital famous.

The 2026 Strasbourg Christmas market runs from Friday 27 November to Thursday 24 December. The chalets open from 11.30am to 9pm, except on opening day and on 24 December. They are spread across eight sites, mostly in the historic centre, the Grande Île, where cars are banned while the market is open.

Whether you’re travelling as a couple, with your family, with friends or even with your dog, choosing where to stay therefore comes down to one question: are you arriving by train or by car? This guide brings together the official dates and opening hours, the market locations, the quietest days, the access rules and two addresses, one for each case.

Dates and opening hours

The chalets then follow three sets of opening hours.

Day Chalet opening hours
Friday 27 November (opening day) 2pm-9pm
Saturday 28 November to Wednesday 23 December 11.30am-9pm, every day
Thursday 24 December (last day) 11.30am-6pm

According to the Strasbourg Tourist Office, the market dates back to 1570, has more than 300 chalets and welcomes nearly two million visitors every year.

For a visit between Christmas and New Year, head to Colmar, whose markets stay open until 29 December (see below).

Which day to choose to avoid the crowds

Monday and Tuesday. The City of Strasbourg says that crowds are generally smaller on Mondays and Tuesdays, and larger on Wednesdays and at weekends.

A stay from Sunday evening to Wednesday morning therefore covers the two quietest days. A December weekend, by contrast, puts your visit on the busiest days. For visitors with a dog, the City also recommends coming in the morning or early in the week.

The eight Christmas market sites

The Strasbourg market is not confined to a single square. The official Strasbourg Capitale de Noël website lists eight sites.

Market Location
Christkindelsmärik Place Broglie
Au pied du Grand Sapin (At the foot of the Great Christmas Tree) Place Kléber
Autour de la Cathédrale (Around the Cathedral) Place de la Cathédrale and Place du Château
La Petite France Place Benjamin Zix and Place Saint-Thomas
Le marché du Carré d'Or Place du Temple Neuf
Le Quai des Délices Terrasse Rohan, Place du Marché-aux-Poissons
Les Irréductibles Petits Producteurs d'Alsace Square Louise Weiss
Le marché OFF Place Grimmeissen

The Christkindelsmärik, "the Christ Child market" in Alsatian, is the historic market. According to the Tourist Office, it has been held on Place Broglie since 1870. On Place Kléber, the Great Christmas Tree stands around thirty metres tall.

Getting around : The Grande Île is best explored on foot

While the market is open, traffic in the Grande Île is strictly regulated and banned, and access checks are set up at the entrances to the bridges. Cars therefore stop at the edge of the centre.

  • By train : Strasbourg station is about ten minutes' walk from the historic centre, along a signposted pedestrian route from the station forecourt. From Paris, the TGV takes under two hours.
  • By tram : lines A, C, D and F serve the area around the market squares.
  • By car : the park-and-ride car parks (P+R) of the CTS network cost €4.20 a day, including a return tram ticket for every passenger in the vehicle.

For visitors with reduced mobility: wheelchairs and walking frames are lent free of charge, without booking, at the information chalet on Place Kléber, in exchange for an identity document. An accessibility map shows routes, ramps and accessible toilets.

Where to stay for the Strasbourg Christmas market

There are two approaches.

  • Staying in the Grande Île means you can do the whole trip on foot, including the walk back after the chalets close at 9pm. It is the simplest option if you arrive by train. The trade-off: car access is restricted for the whole duration of the market.
  • Staying on the outskirts, near the motorway and a bus line, avoids the traffic restrictions and settles the parking question. You then reach the centre by public transport.

Strasbourg's two Citadines apart-hotels, operated by The Ascott Limited, each match one of these cases. Their units have a fully equipped kitchen, a real plus for families and stays of several nights.

Citadines Kléber Strasbourg: the market on foot

The private car park is free, subject to availability. It is the right address for travellers arriving from Germany or Switzerland via the A35, or keeping the car to visit Alsatian villages. To reach the market, buses 29, 203 and 210, which stop outside the residence, run to the Rotonde stop, served by trams A and D. Details are on the location and transport page.
